St. Albert Takes Home Municipal Sustainability Award

St. Albert does it again! Each year at the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) annual convention and trade show, municipal colleagues from across Alberta are awarded for their professionalism, diligence, and commitment in the field of public service.

St. Albert was chosen for the 2019 Sustainability in Action award for a municipality with a population of over 10,000. This award recognizes municipalities who have demonstrated excellence in advancing environmental sustainability and in our case – the City’s Environmental Master Plan, with an emphasis on economic sustainability. St. Albert was recognized for the same award category in 2018 for the Environmental Master Plan and the emphasis on environmental stewardship.

Awards won for Sustainability in Action

The Sustainability in Action Award recognizes municipalities that have demonstrated excellence in implementing and achieving measurable outcomes in sustainability plans. St. Albert was recognized for our Business Beautification program, which is a joint effort between several internal departments (Planning & Development, Economic Development and Utilities & Environment) and the local business community.

Over the ten years of the program, it has helped fund over 400 projects, recently averaging over 50 businesses participating per year. The benefits of this program hit all pillars of the City’s Community Vision and are directly tied to the targets and goals as established in the City’s Environmental Master Plan. Programs like Business Beautification are key to ensuring the continued longevity and viability of economic sustainability in the City of St. Albert.

On September 25, at the AUMA convention and trade show in Edmonton, Mayor Cathy Heron, City Councillors Jacquie Hansen and Wes Broadhead and Director Utilities and Environment, Jay Mason accepted the award on behalf of the City.
